PHILLY CHEESESTEAK TRAYBAKE WITH PGI WELSH BEEF

Disclosure: This is a commissioned recipe post for PGI Welsh Beef

The way to my heart has always been through a good steak, which is why I have created this Philly cheesesteak traybake as a Valentine’s meal!

Philly cheesesteak is an iconic food from Philadelphia- a combination of steak, peppers and onions served up in a ‘hoagie’ with melted cheese. I’ve foregone the bread roll, and created a mouth-watering version that is quick and easy to make, and a guaranteed crowd-pleaser! This uses sirloin steak for a truly melt-in-the-mouth effect.

What is PGI Welsh Beef?

If you haven’t heard of PGI Welsh Beef before, the PGI stands for ‘Protected Geographical Indicator’- what this means is that the European Commission has recognised the unique heritage, character, quality and reputation of Welsh Beef and given it a protected status. This means that no other beef product can be sold as Welsh Beef, so you will always know that what you are buying is of the highest quality, born and reared in Wales, and fully traceable.

The rolling hills and beautiful landscapes of Wales are the backdrop to the farms which combine both traditional and modern practices in order to produce the highest possible quality product.

WHAT ARE THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EATING BEEF?

Beef can be a vital part of a healthy, balanced diet. It is packed full of protein and iron: protein is essential for growth and repair in the body, and is a key building block for bones, muscles, cartilage and skin. Protein rich food also helps keep you fuller for longer.

Iron is essential in preventing anaemia, and a sign of deficiency can be feeling weak, tired and irritable. Iron is used in the body to produce hemoglobin, contained within red blood cells, it allows them to carry oxygen to the body’s tissues. Red meat contains heme iron, which is only found in animal proteins and is absorbed more efficiently by the body that non-heme iron (found in green vegetables).

Red meat also contains essential B vitamins and minerals, vitamin D, zinc and selenium. Vitamin B12 is vital for the human body- it keeps our body’s nerve and blood cells healthy, and produces DNA. You can only get vitamin B12 through a balanced diet, as the body cannot produce this on its own.

Grass-fed beef, such as Welsh Beef, also tends to be lower in fat, and have a slightly higher proportion of omega-3 than conventionally fed cattle. *
