Homemade barbecue sauce

I love this zingy and rich barbecue sauce alongside barbecued meat and vegetables

  • 2 onions (roughly diced)
  • 2 tins chopped tomatoes
  • 4 cloves garlic (crushed)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder
  • juice of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tbsp worcestershire sauce
  • salt and pepper
  • low calorie cooking spray or spray oil (add syns if on Slimming World and using oil)


  1. Fry the onions until soft and starting to brown, then add the garlic and stir fry for a couple of minutes
  2. Add all of the other ingredients, bring to the boil, and then simmer on low for at least 40 minutes, preferably 1 hour.
  3. Stir occasionally, adding a little water if starting to look too dry.
